Documentary Wedding Photography

My style of photography is known as documentary style, also referred to as  photojournalism or reportage photography, If we apply that term to wedding photography it is a step away from traditional posed photographs. It is a way of capturing the day as is happens in a more candid style capturing  unposed images.

My aim is to make the photography as unobtrusive as possible to allow you to take part and enjoy the day. I will capture the fun, the looks and the emotions that you may be too busy to see.

After describing what documentary wedding photography is here is what a documentary wedding photographer does.

Through the years it has been normal practice for traditional wedding photographers to take up an amount of time during the day organising and taking posed photographs. The longer this goes on, the harder it becomes to keep smiling. Traditional photographers will confer with the bride and groom before the wedding and come with a long list of who should be in the posed photographs. It can take a long time to get the right people in the right photograph and then organise them all. Some go missing and have to be called. This is time consuming and can be boring for quests that aren’t involved or who are awaiting their turn.

By comparison documentary style tells the story of the day and is not so planned and organised. The result of this means that the photographs often capture things that are unexpected. This can be emotional or funny. The photographer won’t organise people or get in the way. Being discreet and in the background means the subjects are more relaxed and so much more natural. Capturing the spontaneity of the moment is so important.
